One of the best things your can do for hormone balance is switch to non-toxic products (skincare, cleaning supplies, candles, containers, etc). Many chemicals, both natural and man-made, may mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones, known as the endocrine system. These endocrine disrupting chemicals and xenoestrogens (mimics estrogen in the body) are one of the fundamental root causes of hormonal imbalances and you’re using them every single day, even multiple times a day. And aside from hormones, they are affecting your health in general.

Common Endocrine Disruptors & How To Avoid Them:

  • BPA
  • PFAS
  • Phthalates Phytoestrogens Triclosan
  • Sulfates
  • Heavy metals Fragrance or parfum
Get rid of (or reduce) plastic use

Those plastic food storage containers, get rid of them and replace them with glass containers. Also try to bring your own glass water bottles/ coffee tumblers to the coffee shop to prevent from drinking out of plastic cups. Replace plastic baggies with reusable lunch bags, and plastic cling wrap with beeswax-coated cloth. You can’t eliminate all plastic, but you can take easy steps to reduce your plastic use.

Switch to non-toxic skincare

Conventional skin care is full of endocrine disrupting chemicals and xenoestrogens (mimics estrogen in the body). These ingredients are one of the fundamental root causes of hormonal imbalances and you’re using them every single day, even multiple times a day!

Get rid of fragrances

The word fragrance on a label signifies a mix of potentially hundreds of ingredients and we know that phthalates, one class of chemicals typically found in fragrance, can disrupt hormones. Fortunately, fragrance isn’t necessary for a product to function well or be effective. Choose fragrance-free creams, cleaning products, and laundry detergents. Also switch out your candles, say goodbye to those bath & body work candles. Instead look for non-toxic natural ones made with wax from soy, beeswax or other 100% vegetable wax and a 100% paper, cotton, hemp or wood wick with fragrance that is 100% from essential oils.

Remove toxins from your environment

Chemicals found on common household products can collect in dust around your house (and then you are stuck breathing it in). Try using a vacuum with a HEPA filter which will also reduce your exposure to other chemicals that can accumulate in your home. Also investing in an air purifier is one of the best things you can do for your overall health and hormones. I bought two on Amazon and it has completely changed the air quality in our apartment which has changed how we feel – especially living in an older building.

Avoid cans

Most canned foods are likely lined with BPA to keep them from corroding. (Even cans labeled BPA free may use a similar chemical that hasn’t been proved any safer) Choosing fresh, frozen, or dried foods (like beans) that aren’t packaged in can is a smart preventive measure. Aseptic brick cartons or glass packaging are both better than cans. Whole Foods actually sells beans in cartons and is what I try and get. Or you can buy in bulk at Whole Foods and bring your own containers.

Pay attention to what you’re eating

There are certain pesticides that have been linked to hormone disruption which is why it’s important to eat organic foods as much as possible. I know that buying organic everything can get pricey so if you can’t afford that then at least stick to the dirty dozen and clean fifteen. When you can, avoid food packaging. And think about how you prepare your food. EDCs can hide in nonstick pots and pans. There are many different brands of non-toxic cookware – I switched to Our Place Always Pan (after seeing my other pans literally falling apart and realizing I was ingesting that into my body) and love it.

Clean smarter

While cleaning, many of us actually introduce indoor air pollutants into our homes in the form of harsh chemical products. It’s difficult to know what chemicals any given cleaning product contains because companies aren’t required to list the ingredients on the label. So instead of trusting the companies word, switch to companies who are up front on what is going into their products. My go-to non toxic cleaning product is Branch Basics – I use it for everything from all purpose cleaner to laundry detergent.
